What My Mother Doesn't KnowWhat My Mother Doesn't Know
by Sonya Sones
Orion Children's
ISBN: 1842552090

Reviewed by Catherine Knight, aged 13.

I recently read What My Mother Doesn't Know, by Sonya Sones. It is a book that is told in different poems and verses. They are all quite short, but some are shorter than others.

The main characters are Sophie, who tells the story, Grace and Rachel (Sophie's two best friends), and her ex-boyfriend, Lou. There is also her boyfriend, who at the beginning of the book is her current boyfriend and at the end of the book is her ex-boyfriend. He is called Dylan. In the middle comes Murphy (his real name is Robin). Murphy is from Sophie's school and is my favourite character because he seems a genuine guy who really cares for Sophie.

There is not really an actual plot/storyline because of how it is told (in verses). Having said this, the poems do come together. They are not random. If I was to say what they are about, though, this is what I would say:
The poems are about Sophie and her life. They tell of her arguments with her parents, her school live, her friends, and, most of all, her out-of-control love life. It's mainly about Dylan and then about Murphy/Robin. The best part is the ending: I love it!!

I loved this book because I could relate to it. In fact, any girl could. It seems true. I believed in Sophie. I believed in her friends and parents. Most of all, I believed in Murphy/Robin and wished that I could meet a guy like him! I think that any girl would like this book. It is definitely not a book for boys! I didn't think this I would like this book, but it turned out to be one of the best books I have read for a long time. I give it 10/10.
