Motivation and aspiration at the RIF conference
The RIF annual conference took
place at the British Library on 27 February 2009. Focusing on a theme of
motivation and aspiration, speakers included author Louis Ferrante,
publisher Verna Wilkins, and representatives from Barrington Stoke and
Ransom publishing. We were delighted that over 100 project
coordinators were able to attend, taking part in a range of workshops that
included motivating boys, generating school-wide excitement about reading
and involving families. If you were unable to attend, or would like a
reminder of what you heard, you can download speaker and workshop
presentations from the conference page of the RIF website.
Book ordering deadline approaches
Summer
term is fast approaching, and most RIF
book budgets must be spent by the end of July 2009. Please contact
your RIF project manager if you would like an update on how much you
have left in your account, need assistance with book ordering or have yet
to place an order. An improved version of the BBfS website has been
launched with a range of exciting and useful new features - highlights
include easier book searching and a 'look inside' feature. Visit
the project zone of the RIF website to download a guide to the the new
BBfS website, or for resources including new
booklists for dual language titles and less keen and less confident
readers.
Young reviewers wanted
RIF
would like to give children the chance to recommend a book to other
children taking part in a RIF project. If the children you work with have
a favourite book, we'd love to hear about it. Successful reviewers will
not only see their review on the RIF recommends booklist, but could also
win themselves an extra book prize! Reviews should be short (one line,
under 25 words) and include the title of the book, and the first name and
age of the reviewer. Email RIF to submit a review. Email RIF to submit a
review.
Spotlight on events
Congratulations to Emma Charters, project coordinator at St Matthias CE
Primary in Hackney, who has won our recent Event Spotlight competition.
All project coordinators were invited to submit a short description of an
inspirational RIF event they had held. Emma described a fancy dress day at
which an autistic child she works with had enjoyed both dressing up as a
lion, and being able to choose a book with a lion on the cover. Emma has
won a special pop-up edition of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar for her
school.
Score goals for
non-readers
If you know a group of football
loving children who might need a bit of encouragement to read more, why
not take the PremierLeague Reading Stars Challenge? This innovative project,
run in partnership by the Premier League, the Football Foundation and the
National Literacy Trust, uses footballers as positive reading role models.
Every season, 20
Premier League footballers become Reading Stars for their club and
encourage the nation to have a read of their favourite titles. This year,
they are challenging any group of youngsters in the country to read 100
books as a team. Every participating group receives a free PLRS wall
chart and 100 stickers, and every group that completes the challenge is
entered into a quarterly grand prize draw to win top Premier League
prizes. To register and claim your free PLRS Challenge pack, visit www.premierleaguereadingstars.org.uk.
