Reading Is Fundamental, UK
Promoting book choice, ownership and the fun of reading

Starting a RIF project

You must register with us if you want to run a RIF project. Registration provides you with a unique RIF code which gives you access to substantial book discounts with all the major children's publishers. Make sure that you have read the rest of this About RIF section before applying; if you have any questions, please contact us.

It costs £23 per child per year to run a three-book RIF project. This includes:

  • three free books per child (using publisher discounts)
  • support costs (a handbook, ongoing support from your project manager, two free places at our annual conference, a subscription to our termly magazine, RIF, UK Update and access to password-protected areas of this website)
  • materials costs (a RIF bag and bookmark for each child, three stickers and bookplates for each child and a set of posters to promote your project).

RIF has limited funds available to support new projects, so we encourage applicants to identify their own funding source to fully or part-fund their RIF project. Download fundraising advice.

As most of our projects run according to the academic year, our main funding-allocation period is September, with an additional period (funding permitting) in January. However, we welcome applications at any time and will always consider adding you to our waiting list.

Before completing your application, give some thought to the group of children you are hoping to work with, why they would benefit from RIF, whether you will be able to find volunteers to help with book selection and events, and the sorts of events you might choose to organise. Detailed and well-considered applications are much more likely to be successful.

Once you're ready to apply, download and complete our application form, and send it to us by email, post or fax. We will acknowledge your application within a week of receiving it. If you have any questions about completing your application, we will be happy to discuss it with you. Contact us.
