Reading Is Fundamental, UK
Promoting book choice, ownership and the fun of reading

How RIF works

RIF helps children of all ages discover the pleasures of reading. In each project, children and young people up to the age of 19 choose up to three free books a year to take home and keep at special events. These events feature fun, high-quality activities, which may involve authors, poets or storytellers.

Children are helped to find a new book that they are genuinely interested in - it may be a factual book about football, dinosaurs or animals; fantasy or adventure stories; a tie-in to a popular television programme or film; a joke book or a book of poems. RIF provides children with the opportunity to discover their own preferences and identify favourite authors to read again and again.

Each RIF child also receives:

  • a drawstring bag for their books
  • a bookmark, stickers and a set of book plates.
